Jody Nelson

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God." Colossians 3:16

Hi, welcome to my website. My name is Jody Nelson. I enjoy singing and playing gospel music, particulary gospel bluegrass and folk music. I got a rather late start in life playing stringed instruments, not picking up a guitar until I was 30 years old. Although I consider the guitar as my primary instrument, I also enjoy plinking around on the banjo, mandolin, mountain dulcimer, and hammer dulcimer, the latter two which I built myself. One of these days I'm going to pick up the fiddle which I got a while back and start learning to play something on it as I have time. I have played in our praise band at church for several years and now also play in a gospel bluegrass band called One More River. I have been influenced by a variety of musicians and styles of music - bluegrass, folk, blues, jazz, old-time gospel, and contemporary Christian. One of my favorite things is to take an old hymn and give it a bluegrass/folk flavor. Some of my favorite performers and influences include Norman Blake, Doc Watson, Alison Krauss, Tim O'Brien, Claire Lynch, Front Range, Anne and Pete Sibley, and the Carter Family. My wife, Kathy, ocasionally joins me for duets as well. When all is said and done, I can often be heard to respond after playing a song, "Something like that!" since each time it may be a little different. I hope you enjoy what you find on the page. I'll try to keep it updated with new things.

Merry Christmas

I hope this post finds everyone ready for the Christmas holiday (its only 5 days away now).  Don't let the busyness of the season take distract you from the true meaning of Christmas - Jesus.  I've been busy playing at church on our praise team lately.  Also the band I am in, One More River, has been practicing as we get ready for the Winter GospelGrass festival on Saturday, January 14th at West Bowles Community Church (12325 West Bowles) in Littleon, CO.  It should be a lot of fun.  There will be some jamming starting at noon, workshops, and then the concert start at 2pm.  There are 7 bands that will be performing.  Best of all its FREE!  Visit http://www.gospelgrass.com/ to get more details on the events that day and the schedule.  I believe One More River is playing at 4pm.  So if you are not busy that day come on down and have a listen.  As I mentioned in the last post below, I put up a couple of new video from a concert we did at a church near Longmont.  So check that out.  Till later,

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Summer's Over!

Hi Friends,

I can't believer the summer is over all ready.  Where did the time go?  It has been a busy playing season this year - both individually and as part of the One More River (OMR) band that I am now a part of.  Lots of festivals, jam sessions, and pickin opportunities.  I had another opportunity to play a solo timeslot at the 2012 Gospel Grass Festival in Calhan, CO in late June.  I hope to get a couple videos from that set up on the video links soon.  OMR played at a couple of festivals this summer - Gospel Grass on the Divide in Monument in July and the Masonville Gospel Music Festival in Masonville in August.  I plan to add a few videos from the Masonville event soon as well.  Take a look at the playing schedule to see where I have played this summer.  I am continuing to improve my mandolin playing.  This is especially helpful since I play the mandolin on an occasional song in OMR.  I am even learning to play upright bass!  That's fun too.  It has been a good summer and I look forward to what God has in store for the fall and coming year.  Look back at the website in the near future to check out the new posted videos.  Have a great one.  See you at a jam session soon.

Festival Time

Festival time is here.  Kathy and I went to North Platte, NE on April 30 to hear several bands including Dailey and Vincent.  They were incredible.  Unbelievable musicianship and vocal harmonies.  I would encourage everyone if you get the chance take a listen to them or better yet see them live if they are in your area.  We are looking forward to camping and picking at several festivals this summer.  The band I am in called One More River has been practicing every couple of weeks so we can get ready to play at some small venues this summer.  This has been a fun experience and I'm looking forward to playing the mandolin on a couple songs and even the standup bass!  We'll see how that goes.  We are still playing about every month at an assisted living facility not far from our house and we always enjoy seeing the folks and singing for them.  They are so appreciative and also a forgiving audience.  But we have fun singing with and for them.  Hopefully in the next couple months I will be putting up some more video of some new songs - both myself individually and the band.  If anyone has any suggestions for the blog or would like to see some different types of things on it let me know.

Isaiah 55:10-11
"For as the rain and snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish what which I purpose, and prosper in the thing for which I sent it."

Here is a passage I like that basically says God's Word goes out in many forms - written, verbal, singing, etc. and it will accomplish what He purposes.  I especially like the idea of singing the Gospel message because it means God can use it to draw folks to a relationship with Him.  Its become my prayer that as I and/or the band sing forth the message of God's love that He will use it to draw folks to Himself.  So be praying that us for this summer.

Well, talk to you later.  God bless you all.

Getting Ready for the Festival Season

Hi Everyone,

It won't be long until the summer festival season begins.  There are even a couple of early ones coming up.  North Platte, NE has the Country Bluegrass Show at the end of April and then in mid-May there is the All-Colorado Bluegrass Festival in Castle Rock.  Time to start practicing some new songs for all those jams.  Well, enjoy your spring time and get those plants started for the garden since it won't be long until we can put them outside.

WinterGrass and Goldfield Festivals Over Now

I can't believe we are already into the middle of February 2011.  Where has the time gone?  It's hard to believe I've already played in the two winter festivals I had the opportunity to play in.  The WinterGrass Festival here in Denver went well.  I got to play in the band One More River.  That was a lot of fun and gave me a real appreciation for the amount of practice it would take to become a topnotch, tight sounding, bluegrass band.  We were not that, but we had a lot of fun and I enjoyed getting to know the other band members.  And everyone I spoke to afterwards thought we sounded pretty good for only having practiced together 6 times and learning all new songs for our set!  There is a link on the left for a nice 15 min. video that John Gilmore put together of the festival.  Our band is the last one on the video, but there were lots of other good bands and lots of great music that day.  Enjoy!

On February 5, Kathy and I were at the Goldfield Ghost Town near Apache Junction, AZ for the Goldfield GospelGrass Festival.  I got to play 2 sets at the festival that day.  One was outside and the other inside the little church they have at the top of the hill at the town.  The festival was a lot of fun and Kathy and I got to see several family members and a friend of mine from high school who were able to come to hear the performances.  It was a beautiful day and lots of great bands and good gospel bluegrass music.  There are several links to videos of different songs I sang at the festival in the links section on the left.  I hope you enjoy some of the music.

Now there is a break in the action before the next festival I'll be playing at which will be in Calhan, CO on June 23-26, 2011.  This will be the 12th Annual GospelGrass Festival.  In the meantime, I'll be practicing and trying to learn to play the mandolin I got last summer.  Also there will be some fun times where Kathy and I will go and sing and play at the assisted living homes.  That is always fun to be able to encourage some of the folks there.  Well, until next time take care and God bless.  Keep up that singing and playing.

Winter GospelGrass Festival

Hi Everyone,
Mark your calendars.  It's less than 2 weeks until the Winter GospelGrass Festival.  The festival is on January 15 and will be at Centennial Elementary School at 4665 Raleigh St. in Denver.  The festival starts at 10:30 and bands will be playing until about 8:15-8:30pm.  The band I'm playing in, One More River, is playing about 7:40pm.  There are also lots of workshops throughout the day.  So bring your instrument and gain a few tips on how to play better.  The festival is free.  So come on down.  See you there!
