Jody Nelson

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God." Colossians 3:16

Hi, welcome to my website. My name is Jody Nelson. I enjoy singing and playing gospel music, particulary gospel bluegrass and folk music. I got a rather late start in life playing stringed instruments, not picking up a guitar until I was 30 years old. Although I consider the guitar as my primary instrument, I also enjoy plinking around on the banjo, mandolin, mountain dulcimer, and hammer dulcimer, the latter two which I built myself. One of these days I'm going to pick up the fiddle which I got a while back and start learning to play something on it as I have time. I have played in our praise band at church for several years and now also play in a gospel bluegrass band called One More River. I have been influenced by a variety of musicians and styles of music - bluegrass, folk, blues, jazz, old-time gospel, and contemporary Christian. One of my favorite things is to take an old hymn and give it a bluegrass/folk flavor. Some of my favorite performers and influences include Norman Blake, Doc Watson, Alison Krauss, Tim O'Brien, Claire Lynch, Front Range, Anne and Pete Sibley, and the Carter Family. My wife, Kathy, ocasionally joins me for duets as well. When all is said and done, I can often be heard to respond after playing a song, "Something like that!" since each time it may be a little different. I hope you enjoy what you find on the page. I'll try to keep it updated with new things.

11th Annual Gospel Winterfest

Hi Everyone,

If you didn't make it to the 11th Annual Gospel Winterfest last weekend (1/14) at the West Bowles Community Church in Littleton you missed out on some great performances and picking. Seven bands played throughout the afternoon and evening along with lots of jamming and instrument workshops.  And given that the Broncos got blown out, you wouldn't have missed much from that standpoint either!  Anyway it was a lot of fun and fellowship.  I've posted some new videos of a few songs the band I am in "One More River" did at the festival on Youtube.  Click on the links to the left that have "11th Annual Gospel Winterfest" in the title to see those.  We are getting better each time so by the time we get to heaven we ought to be really good!  Anyway it's a lot of fun.  I'll let you all know the next time our band will be playing and perhaps you can come on down and have a listen - live!

If you are looking for some gospel bluegrass jamming opportunities come on down to Pickin' on Tennyson on Friday, February 10.  Bring your instrument or just come to listen but its always a fun evening of pickin and music.

Well take care and God bless.

Jody
