Jody Nelson

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God." Colossians 3:16

Hi, welcome to my website. My name is Jody Nelson. I enjoy singing and playing gospel music, particulary gospel bluegrass and folk music. I got a rather late start in life playing stringed instruments, not picking up a guitar until I was 30 years old. Although I consider the guitar as my primary instrument, I also enjoy plinking around on the banjo, mandolin, mountain dulcimer, and hammer dulcimer, the latter two which I built myself. One of these days I'm going to pick up the fiddle which I got a while back and start learning to play something on it as I have time. I have played in our praise band at church for several years and now also play in a gospel bluegrass band called One More River. I have been influenced by a variety of musicians and styles of music - bluegrass, folk, blues, jazz, old-time gospel, and contemporary Christian. One of my favorite things is to take an old hymn and give it a bluegrass/folk flavor. Some of my favorite performers and influences include Norman Blake, Doc Watson, Alison Krauss, Tim O'Brien, Claire Lynch, Front Range, Anne and Pete Sibley, and the Carter Family. My wife, Kathy, ocasionally joins me for duets as well. When all is said and done, I can often be heard to respond after playing a song, "Something like that!" since each time it may be a little different. I hope you enjoy what you find on the page. I'll try to keep it updated with new things.

In the Midst of Summer

Hi Everyone,

It has been a busy summer already and we are only one month into it.  One More River played at the 13th Annual GospelGrass Festival in Calhan and at GospelGrass on the Divide in June.  I have added a couple of photos of OMR playing at GospelGrass on the Divide.  I also did a solo set at the festival in Calhan.  Kathy and I have played off and on at the Retreat at Church Ranch (an assisted living facility in Westminster).  We really enjoy playing for the folks there.  It brings them joy and encouragement and we have a lot of fun playing for a forgiving audience!  We are heading off to some festivals (just to listen) in July and then OMR will be playing a couple of times in August - at Lakewood Estates and also at the Evergreen Fine Arts Festival.  Well keep cool this summer and I'll try to post a little more frequently for the rest of the year.  See you later.

Jody
